The MD Degrees will be recognized only if they are for enrolment of medical practitioners in the countries from where they are obtained. The Union government, on March 10, issued a notification under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956,recognizing postgraduate medical degrees awarded in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.K. and the U.S., generally referred to as the English-speaking countries. According to reports, the government’s decision was to overcome the shortage of medical practitioners in India. However, the government has made it clear that these degrees will be recognized on condition that they are recognized for enrolment of medical practitioners in the countries from where they are obtained.
Foreign postgraduate medical degrees used to be recognized in India in the past. This was stopped when Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister, as countries such as the U.K. did not recognize Indian postgraduate degrees. The system in place was mutual recognition in which India recognized postgraduate degrees of those countries which recognized its.
MD Degree in India :
The screening test will also be mandatory for those students who have got MBBS degrees from a country with which India has a reciprocity agreement. Under this rule, foreign nationals with medical degrees from their countries could practice in India without appearing in the screening test and Indians with MBBS degree from home could go there and treat patients Students went in droves to getadmission in medical colleges in Nepal, with which India has a reciprocity clause, and had approached the SC after MCI said they were required to appear in the screening test.

MD Degree Recognition by MCI :
The MCI says the number of registered allopathic doctors in the country is 6,83,582, with one doctor for every 1,634 population. In addition, there are more than six lakh practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy. There are 271 medical colleges, out of which 138 are in the government sector and the remaining 133 in the private sector. The colleges can admit 31,172 MBBS students a year, and the number of seats available in various postgraduate medical courses is approximately 11,005 annually. However, medical practitioners say that only if the MCI and the Dental Council of India (DCI) recognize the courses in foreign countries can the degree holders register themselves in the country and practice
Doctor of Medicine:
The Doctor of Medicine is a terminal medical degree for practitioners of Medicine. The meaning of the degree varies between different countries. In countries that follow the United States system, the M.D. denotes a first professional graduate degree awarded upon initial graduation from medical school. In countries that follow the tradition of the United Kingdom, the M.D. denotes a research doctorate, higher doctorate, honorary doctorate or advanced clinical coursework degree restricted to medical graduates. In those countries, the title of the equivalent first professional degree is Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.
Specialization MD Degree in medical:
The National Board of Examinations after completing 3 years of post-MBBS residency training in teaching hospitals recognized by the board. The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Bombay, India (Established 1912) also awards higher postgraduate degrees in clinical and pre-clinical specialties, called FCPS; it involves three years of study and the successful completion of an examination, which includes both theoretical and practical elements, and a research thesis and a viva. The FCPS is representative of specialty clinical training, and equivalent to MD/MS/DNB in India, or Ph.D. or Professional Doctorates in other parts of the world. Until 2007, the Government of India and the Medical Council of India recognized the FCPS qualification – since then, this is being done by State Medical Councils.
