Eligibility for Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and surgery (BAMS) required 10+2 physics , chemistry and biology. Minimum age of this course is 17. Duration of this course is five and half years including six months of internship. Student selection for BAMS is through the same all India entrance examination conducted by Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE). Premed Entrance Exam conducted by different states on their own for domiciled students. Some national level institution give admission on the merit basis in the 10+2 examination or conduct their own entrance test for admission to BAMS course.
In some institution offered certificate course , duration of this course is 1 year to 2 years. Eligibility required S.S.L.C . Students can apply Post Graduate after BAMS passed. Duration of Post Graduate course Doctor of Medicine in Ayurveda (M.D.(AYU)) and Master of Surgery in Ayurveda (M.S.(AYU)) is 3 years. Students who have passed MBBS course recognized by Medical Council o f India and have completed one year internship training can also apply for Post Graduate in Ayurveda.

In the past , BAMS graduates has only one option for their career that was to start own practice. But nowadays there are many opportunities are available for BAMS graduates . They are classified into 5 categories

A student entering Ayurveda practice who cannot avoid the details study about Ayurvedic samhitas. The student should know about modern medical science and interpretation of modern diagnostic tests. Student can work with senior practitioners for at least 1–2 years before entering own practice , Because practical experience needed for becoming a best practitioner. Students can do an additional diploma or certificate courses like yoga , physiotherapy , etc. ., for increase their value of their practice.
When a student wants to pursue their career in academics, it is needful to do post graduation. They can go for post graduate diplomas if they cannot get opportunity for MD. Who has 10 years of clinical experience or 5 years of teaching experience is eligible for PhD. The duration of such studies varies from 6 months to 2 years. The course modules are include various aspects of clinical. After completed the course, students can get job as Clinical Research Associate in research unit of pharmaceutical companies. BAMS students can also do MSc (Biotechnology/Bioinformatics/Health Sciences) , it is a very challenging course and available at some universities. It is a full time course , duration is 2 years. Anyone has not interested in clinical practice but want to have a career related to the medical field, they have many choices. MPH (Masters in Public Health), MHA (Masters in Health Administration) and MBA (Hospital and Healthcare management) are in great demand. Apart from this, courses like Sports Medicine, Disaster Management, Industrial Management, Preventive and Promotive healthcare, Masters in Personnel Management are also a best options. In every year , UPSC examinations and state level administration examinations are conducted. BAMS students are eligible to attend these examinations and enter in the government services as administrator.
