               Ayurveda is a very activistic hindu traditional medicine which developed around 600 BC in India . Ayurveda is knowledge about how it is working and how to maintain as long as possible. It is together with National health care system. It established across the country and is very effective treatment for any disease. It is best in India nowhere else we cannot find a professional practitioner of this medical system . Ayurveda has become very popular among the tourist especially foreigners.                Ayurveda aims to make happy ,peaceful and healthy society. The two important aims of Ayurveda are

Course Details


               Eligibility for Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and surgery (BAMS) required 10+2 physics , chemistry and biology. Minimum age of this course is 17. Duration of this course is five and half years including six months of internship. Student selection for BAMS is through the same all India entrance examination conducted by Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE). Premed Entrance Exam conducted by different states on their own for domiciled students. Some national level institution give admission on the merit basis in the 10+2 examination or conduct their own entrance test for admission to BAMS course.

                In some institution offered certificate course , duration of this course is 1 year to 2 years. Eligibility required S.S.L.C . Students can apply Post Graduate after BAMS passed. Duration of Post Graduate course Doctor of Medicine in Ayurveda (M.D.(AYU)) and Master of Surgery in Ayurveda (M.S.(AYU)) is 3 years. Students who have passed MBBS course recognized by Medical Council o f India and have completed one year internship training can also apply for Post Graduate in Ayurveda.

 Career options after BAMS Course

                In the past , BAMS graduates has only one option for their career that was to start own practice. But nowadays there are many opportunities are available for BAMS graduates . They are classified into 5 categories


  1. Clinical practice
  2. Academic
  3. Research
  4. Management and administration
  5. Drug manufacturing


Clinical practice

                A student entering Ayurveda practice who cannot avoid the details study about Ayurvedic samhitas. The student should know about modern medical science and interpretation of modern diagnostic tests. Student can work with senior practitioners for at least 1–2 years before entering own practice , Because practical experience needed for becoming a best practitioner. Students can do an additional diploma or certificate courses like yoga , physiotherapy , etc. ., for increase their value of their practice.


               When a student wants to pursue their career in academics, it is needful to do post graduation. They can go for post graduate diplomas if they cannot get opportunity for MD. Who has 10 years of clinical experience or 5 years of teaching experience is eligible for PhD. Even Ayurved students can do PhD in non-Ayurvedic subjects like analytical chemistry, biochemistry, etc. Students can join government or private colleges lecturers after completed post graduation,.



               MSc or PG Diploma in Clinical Research are useful courses for a career in research Apart from MD and PhD courses. These courses are available at various institutions throughout the country. The duration of such studies varies from 6 months to 2 years. The course modules are include various aspects of clinical. After completed the course, students can get job as Clinical Research Associate in research unit of pharmaceutical companies. BAMS students can also do MSc (Biotechnology/Bioinformatics/Health Sciences) , it is a very challenging course and available at some universities. It is a full time course , duration is 2 years. Anyone have interested in fieldwork as well as research can go for this course which has ample opportunities in the future.


               Anyone has not interested in clinical practice but want to have a career related to the medical field, they have many choices. MPH (Masters in Public Health), MHA (Masters in Health Administration) and MBA (Hospital and Healthcare management) are in great demand. Apart from this, courses like Sports Medicine, Disaster Management, Industrial Management, Preventive and Promotive healthcare, Masters in Personnel Management are also a best options. In every year , UPSC examinations and state level administration examinations are conducted. BAMS students are eligible to attend these examinations and enter in the government services as administrator.

Drug Manufacturing

                Production of Ayurvedic medicines is an excellent business. Apart from actual manufacturing, cultivation of medicinal plants, oils , commerce a raw materials in the form of powder, extracts, etc., are also in great demand. And also Ayurvedic cosmetics and food products have equally market. It is the need of time that many Ayurvedic graduates should come in this field and use their knowledge and skill. BPharm (Ayurved) and BHU, MSc (Pharmaceutical Medicine), MBA (Medicinal Marketing) (MUHS, Nasik), Diploma in Herbal Medicinal Manufacturing course are also available.
