Southwestern University-Matias H. Aznar Memorial College – Cebu

History:
SWU-MHAM (Southwestern University Matias H. Aznar Memorial College of Medicine,) Inc. was established as Southwestern Colleges in 1946 during the process of rehabilitation after World War II. Don Matias Hipolito Aznar II was the Founders and his wife Doña Anunciacion Barcenilla Aznar, who were the pharmacists by profession. Their vision was to establish a school of medicine that for the common people.


In the 1946-1947 – the Doctor of Medicine Program was opened with 14 pioneering students and 6 faculty members. On 1952 the Doctor of Medicine Program was recognized by full government of Department of Education. On May 26, 1970 the Doctor of Medicine Program of the Southwestern University was converted and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as per the enactment of the Medical Act of 1965 by the Philippine Congress they required all medical colleges in the country to be converted into a non-profit, non-stock educational institution. The name of Southwestern University- Matias H. Aznar Memorial College of Medicine Inc. (SWU- MHAM CM, Inc.) was changed and given a unique institutional identifier number 7071 by the Commission of Higher Education (CHED). To honour and perpetuate the memory of its late founder Don Matias Hipolito Aznar II the Medical College is named as Southwestern University Matias H. Aznar Memorial College of Medicine
After the conversion in 1970 into a non-profit medical institution, the medical college was governed by Board of Trustees.
To fulfills the vision of its founder DON MATIAS HIPOLITO AZNAR II, SWU – Matias H. Aznar Memorial College of Medicine, Inc., provide quality education within the reach of the common people for more than several decades. It offers affordable Doctor of Medicine Program all over the country and provides a academic scholarship also to deserving students by subsidizing their tuition fee.

Now SWU –MHAM CM pursues the values of professionalism, excellence, integrity and social responsibility and strive to include these values into its academic and administrative employees. This was further carried by his successor, MRS. ELMA AZNAR-SIERRA, his daughter, She is the current Chairman of the Board of Trustee and President.
